Camping in the Region

The Rocky Mountain Region is blessed with some of the most beautiful and pristine scenic areas in the country. For the hearty outdoor oriented visitor the desire to experience the basic beauty of the environment is best served by including camping as a vital part of an overall holiday!

Campgrounds featuring various levels of services are available throughout the region. Full-service campgrounds, National and State park camping-grounds and small privately owned and managed camping areas are plentiful in the region. Due to the ever growing popularity of camping, reservations are recommended and/or required at some of the more popular privately owned facilities.

Camping sites in National and State parks are limited. Camping is permitted only in designated areas. It is illegal to camp in pullouts, picnic areas, or parking lots and for safety reasons several sites are limited to hard-sided camping units only. In most parks, reservations are not accepted at all, with most campgrounds usually open on a first-come, first-served basis. Camping is usually limited to 14 days. For information on camping in a particular park contact the park's visitor information office.

Full-service campgrounds offer swimming, rest rooms, hot showers, a convenience store, coin laundries, utilities hookups and may also include amenities such as boating, fishing, mini-golf, full menu cafes and other recreation or entertainment venues.

Kampgrounds or America (KOA), a nation-wide "network" of full service campgrounds provides one-stop shopping to travel whole-salers and individual travelers who want to arrange for camping holidays in the United States and Canada. Since actively entering the overseas market in 1984, KOA international travel representatives have a wide variety of itineraries for motorhome, tent and Kamping Kabin travel. In addition, KOA representatives are always ready to work with wholesalers one-on-one to develop new itineraries to suit their clients' needs and interests.

KOA offers Kamping Kabins, cozy log structures that come complete with wood frame beds and mattresses, lockable doors and (in most areas) electrical light. Motorhome rentals may be arranged at all major gateway cities; both one way and round-trip rentals are available from a variety of companies.

For the recreation-minded holiday traveler, KOA has recently added optional adventure packages, such as white water rafting, horse back riding and/or ranch experiences, bicycling, and various combinations of these activities. At present, these packages are available in select Rocky Mountain locations. When requested, the optional adventures are added into a motorhome, tent or Kamping Kabin itinerary; adventure packages are priced according to the location, type of activity and length of package.
